PET packages (Puppy's Extra Treats, optional software packages)

There are severals ways to install PET packages, the optional software packages you can add to your Puppy Linux installation. The PET package system is analogous to the Windows .exe files that you download and execute to install the software. Here are the procedures I use. Please note that my way is not the only way to do things.

Prequisites

Frugal installation of Puppy Linux on the hard drive

Procedure 1

NOTE: The drawback to this method is that you don't get to save the *.pet file.
  1. Click on the Install icon on the desktop.
  2. Run the PETget package manager.
  3. Select the PET package you want, and follow the instructions from the PETget package manager.

Procedure 2

Not all of the available PET packages are available in the PETget package manager. This procedure allows you to access more PET packages and also allows you to save the .pet files.
  1. Download the *.pet file for the application you wish to install from http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/puppylinux/ or http://ftp.nluug.nl/ftp/pub/os/Linux/distr/puppylinux .
  2. Click on the *.pet file you downloaded, and follow the instructions from the PETget package manger.

My preferred .pet packages

OpenOffice: the open source version of Microsoft Office; includes word processing, spreadsheets, and presentations
Sylpheed: email client
Java
