Debian Linux Installation (Single Boot)

NOTE: This procedure is for dedicated the entire hard drive to a Debian Linux installation.
  1. Boot up the computer with the Debian CD.
  2. Make sure that your modem is properly connected to both your computer and the phone line, because the Debian installation will need to download files at times.
  3. For the window manager, select the XFCE option.
  4. When prompted for the installation option, select "Install" (the default installation option).
  5. Follow the instructions. When in doubt, use the default options.
  6. The installation process takes a few hours but requires your input at times. Multi-tasking is appropriate for this activity so that you can keep yourself occupied during the waits but occasionally check to see if your input is needed.
  7. For the network configuration, use the default host name and domain name.
  8. When prompted for the partitioning method, use the default option (guided - use entire disk). When prompted for the partitioning scheme, keep all files in one partition.
  9. At the end of the installation process, you will be prompted to select a root password, the full name of the user, the username, and user's password.
  10. When prompted to install the GRUB boot loader to the master boot record, select "Yes".
  11. When the installation is finished, you will be prompted to remove the CD and reboot
